Project Description
The cycle path between Loučovice and Vyšší Brod is not a new construction, but a transformation. The intervention in the landscape took place a long time ago. Man once concreted the Spira Canal as a technical channel for paper mill operations. Today, a new route winds along the same body, which reads the landscape in a different way, but with respect for the traces of the past. It does not come with the ambition of creating new beauty, but reveals the one that was created unintentionally – concrete that has aged, grown over, and become dirty. In this way, it highlights the basic idea of sustainability – not to destroy, not to build new, but to think about and transform what already exists.
The intervention was minimal, and that is precisely its strength. The body of the original canal was cleaned and “cut” in one section. The cut opened up views into the green valley of the Devil’s Streams, and the covered technical sewer became an open curve in the landscape. The shape of the path was not designed, but was created where it came from, how it came from. And that is exactly what makes it a landscape element that does not try to dominate, but to blend in. The color of the concrete corpus was unified into white, not sterile, but alive, aging together with nature. The path remains rough, imperfect, the black spots caused by weather and use seem almost “stale”, but that is precisely what makes it fit into its environment. There is no architect in the sense of a creator-artist, but a perceptive editor who removed the excess and let the existing speak.
The project is based on respect for entropy. It accepts time as a co-author. Its unaestheticity reflects authenticity. It is not about design, but about peace. It is not about formalism, but about naturalness. The cycle path between Loučovice and Vyšší Brod is not just a path, but also a legacy. It is an example of how one can approach the landscape: with humility, frugality, and yet strongly.
