The client, a traditional Bengali family, envisioned a transformation of their duplex apartment into a modern and contemporary home. Central to their vision was the expansive deck that overlooks the communal garden, creating a sense of openness and connection with nature.
The design scheme, thus, was intricately planned around the expansive deck overlooking the communal garden. This natural focal point dictated the layout, emphasizing seamless indoor-outdoor transitions and maximising natural light to enhance the spacious feel throughout the residence. The design theme revolves around modernity, characterised by sleek black outlines defining materials and panels.
A compact foyer at the entrance leads into the heart of the home, where a round dining table beneath a beautifully designed staircase sets an elegant tone. The double-height living room captivates with its alabaster dancing lights and extends effortlessly onto the expansive deck, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. To the left, the modern kitchen and utilities boast clean lines and functionality, while to the right, a sliding door reveals a study adorned with a grand bookshelf, a spacious work desk, and a world map — a perfect blend of work and inspiration.
A small passage leads to the elder son’s room, a cosy den, and a discreetly placed powder toilet. Ascending the staircase reveals an upper floor landing with a serene family area and a small puja altar, flanked by private bedrooms designed for comfort and privacy.
Creating the subtle elegance, however, was not an easy task. Integrating fire sprinkler lines protruding from the ceiling presented a significant challenge for Pooja and her team. Careful coordination and creative design solutions ensured these essential safety features were seamlessly incorporated into the overall aesthetic, maintaining the project’s design integrity.
Pooja also created smart space planning solutions that include a compact staircase design that enhances flow and connectivity between levels. The integration of the deck into the living spaces extends visual expanse and connectivity with nature, while automation systems ensure convenience and efficiency. Enveloping small windows with large curtains creates an illusion of expansive vistas, further enhancing the sense of openness and tranquillity.
The material palette includes bold black outlines defining materials and panels, creating a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. Marble mouldings integrated into veneer add texture and elegance, while modern inlays in strategic areas enhance visual interest. The colour palette of maroon/burgundy, grey, black, peach marble, and zebra-like veins in the marble ties the design elements together, creating a cohesive and luxurious ambiance throughout Avenida.
